Southampton Civic Centre To Install Solar Panels

Southampton, on England’s south coast, is about to launch a major green initiative. The biggest city in the county of Hampshire is installing solar panels to its famous Civic Centre.

This prominent building houses the cultural and artistic venue known as the Guildhall. This multi faceted structure has been open since 1937. It boasts concert venues and a lecture theatre. The Civic Centre also contains the city library and art gallery. This is as well as hosting the regional council premises and a police station.

The Civic Centre has had over a hundred solar panels installed, producing electrical energy sufficient for five households. It is said solar panels will make a saving of over a quarter of a million pounds {£360,000}. They will also save carbon levels equivalent to greater than 317 tonnes.

Southampton council furthermore intends to fit solar panels in half a dozen other structures, including a local school. This will purportedly result in energy savings across a period of 15 years. They will add up to amounts in excess of £800,000. This is a city which will see its landscape being altered by installing solar panels.
